Our Mission

Our mission is to develop tools which provide affordable, actionable and near real time information on critical zone and ecosystem behavior

One of the largest challenges the world is facing is food and water security for a growing population. This challenge is exacerbated by changes in diet, groundwater shortages (resulting from a combination of droughts and over use of groundwater resources), soil and groundwater contamination from industrial activities and soil erosion and degradation due to agricultural practices. Multiple other challenges exists, including energy related challenges and challenges related to an aging civil infrastructure.

These challenges have in common that in order to address them the stakeholders in these challenges (water resource managers, farmers, regulatory agencies) need information about what is happening in the near surface (meters to hundreds of meters).

Stakeholders need to know what is happening (and what will happen) where and when and why. Such information can come in a myriad of ways, but in order to be of most value such information should meet three criteria.

  • Actionable
  • Affordably
  • Timely

Obtaining this information is extremely challenging due to various complex interactions between plants, microorganisms, organic matter, soil, and water as well as the wide range of spatial and temporal scales across which these interactions take place. This challenge is exacerbated as these multi-scale interactions vary over time as a function of human activities, landscape position, elevation, environmental and biogeochemical gradients and multiple feedback loops.

While manual research efforts are key to developing the basic insights and tools which enable the translation of data into information, for operational efforts (where we want this understanding at an affordable price point at thousands of sites) we need other tools.

It is our mission to develop these tools.

Our approach to this was to develop vertically integrated cloud based software which ingests heterogeneous data and provides information. More recently we also started to develop custom autonomous hardware to fill certain sensing niches.

This software (known as the Predictive Assimilation Framework (PAF)) integrates data ingestion, analysis and result delivery and is provided under a SAAS (Software a a Service) model. More details can be read on our system description page.
